My Pet Battle Team vs Lil' Oondasta

September 24, 2014 Posted by Vaire ,

For a pet battle fan, there are three things to do on the Timeless Isle: capture new pets, Celestial Tournament, and Lil' Oondasta. The first is easy, the second is complex, and the third is a piece of cake with the right team.

WoW_LilOondasta

Before attempting to defeat Lil' Oondasta, I did a bit of research, put together a team touted as 100% win, and got beaten soundly every time. I read some more, thought about what actually was happening, switched out a pet, and started winning.

I can't call it a 100% win team, because once the RNG was rolling so against me that I lost. It happens, chance is chance. I didn't even get upset, because it was so ridiculous to miss with nearly everything. Of course, Lil' Oondasta critted more than usual that fight as well. So, I'm calling it a 99.9999999% win team.

Team:

  1. Sunreaver Micro-Sentry [P/P] (1,1,1)
  2. Clockwork Gnome [S/B] (1,1,1)
  3. Darkmoon Zeppelin [H/B] (1,2,2)

Battle:

- Call Lightning > Clockwork Gnome gets switched in.
- Build Turret > Metal Fist until dead or you can build another turret > Metal Fist until dead.
- Choose Darkmoon Zeppelin if Sunreaver Micro-Sentry is not dead yet, otherwise it gets chosen automatically.
- Decoy > Missile until Lil' Oondasta dies. You can use Explode if Sunreaver Micro-Sentry is still alive when Lil' Oondasta has less than 615 health left.

The strategy here is to apply the weather effect Lightning Storm, and then have the Clockwork Gnome be the pet switched in by the Frill Blast. You want the turret + the lightning storm to do damage to Lil' Oondasta as many rounds as possible. If you can build two turrets, the damage adds up to lots.

Sunreaver Micro-Sentry is there to only apply the Lightning Storm, you can use any pet with that ability. However, it should go first, or Frill Blast will switch your pet out before it can cast. The third pet can be any pet with a mechanical attack and an avoidance ability, that has just a little less health than Clockwork Gnome because you want the gnome to be the pet that Lil' Oondasta switches in.

Further Reading

Wowhead has info on pets, pet achievements, suggested teams and strategies for each trainer. It is helpful for getting ideas for alternative teams here.

Warcraftpets is an excellent resource for battle pet research and info. There are many guides to pet battles, one of them is 5.4 Guide to Master Tamer (levelling) + Beasts of Fable by Rendigar that I used to make my own teams. It is very detailed and thorough and I highly recommend you read it for teams and strats, then adapt them to your collection. I am using his teams for Beasts of Fable and they are highly successful.

The next step is Celestial Tournament. I used Complete Celestial Tournament Walkthru and Pet list by Elfuego to build the list of pets that I needed to level for these teams. I'm still working on that because I don't have all the pets he recommends, so I'm having to find alternatives and they don't seem to work as well as his teams.

Elfuego has a whole site dedicated to pet battles www.wowpetbattle.com. He has videos, strategies, teams, and loads of info there. Sadly the site design makes it hard to read sometimes, but it's a goldmine if you find what you're looking for.

Tamer Battles continued — Wastewalker Shu, Seeker Zusshi, and Aki the Chosen

It bears repeating: Do not forget to equip the Safari Hat before each battle!

Wastewalker Shu

WoW_PB_Shu

Team:

  1. Red Cricket (1,2,1)
  2. Carry pet
  3. Menagerie Custodian (1,1,2)

Battle:

vs Crusher - Skitter until Whirlpool has 1 round left > Cocoon Strike > Nature's Touch. Repeat until Crusher dies.

vs Pounder - Skitter, Cocoon Strike on cooldown, heal after every Cocoon Strike until Pounder dies.

vs Mutilator - Switch to carry pet > Ability #1 - Switch to Menagerie Guardian > Zap if Sandstorm is still on, otherwise Shock and Awe > Ion Cannon.

Seeker Zusshi

WoW_PB_Zusshi

Team:

  1. Anubisath Idol (1,1,1)
  2. Yellow Moth (1,1,2)
  3. Carry pet

Battle:

vs Diamond - Sandstorm > Deflection > Crush. The rest of the fight relies heavily on RNG. Use Sandstorm on cooldown and deflect every Howling Blast, Crush as a filler.

vs Mollus - Deflect Dive, Sandstorm on cooldown, and Crush as filler.

vs Skimmer - Switch to carry pet > take the sleep > switch to Yellow Moth - Moth Dust (use on cooldown), block Pump with Cocoon Strike > Slicing Wind as filler.

Bonus tamer

This team works against Courageous Yon as well, but he is only accessible if you can fly and is not needed to level one pet to 25 if you have the Safari Hat. However, he is very useful for levelling two pets at a time, or if you want to do all the tamer dailies for loot bags.

To defeat his team, keep Sandstorm on and deflect big hits. Bring out the carry pet during Sandstorm + Flock/Stampede and they won't take any damage at all.

The entrance to his cave in Kun-Lai Summit is hard to find, it is very small opening on a mountainside at coordinates 35.85 74.15.

Aki the Chosen

WoW_PB_Aki

Team:

  1. Flayer Youngling (1,2,2)
  2. Carry pet
  3. Yellow Moth (1,1,2)

Battle:

vs Chirrup - Rampage (if Rampage + Blitz doesn't kill Chirrup, forfeit and start again).

vs Stormlash - Deflection > Blitz until Stormlash dies (if Stormlash kills Flayer Youngling, forfeit and start again).

vs Whiskers - Blitz > Deflection > Switch to carry pet > Switch to Yellow Moth. - Moth Dust (use on cooldown), block Dive with Cocoon Strike > Slicing Wind as filler.

Tamer Battles — Hyuna of the Shrines, Mo'ruk, and Farmer Nishi

The pet abilities for the teams are given in brackets; (1,2,1) means that you choose the first, the second and the first ability of the slot for this fight. If you have pre-made teams, you do not need to switch the abilities around before each fight, they are saved with the team.

Carry pet is any pet that you want to level. These teams win more often than not, but in any battle things can go wrong, RNG may roll against you, or crit too big. Forfeit, heal and start again then.

Do not forget to equip the Safari Hat before each battle!

Hyuna of the Shrines

WoW_PB_Hyuna

Team:

  1. Emerald Whelpling (2,1,1)
  2. Carry pet
  3. Yellow Moth (1,1,2)

Battle:

vs Skyshaper - Moonfire > Tranquility > Emerald Bite > Emerald Bite.

vs Fangor - Moonfire > Tranquility > Emerald Bite > Emerald Bite > Emerald Bite.

vs Dor the Wall - Tranquility (unless Dor misses, whelpling dies on this round). - Switch to carry pet > Ability #1. - Switch to Yellow Moth > Moth Dust (use on cooldown), block Headbutt with Cocoon Strike, and use Slicing Wind as a filler until Dor dies.

Mo'ruk

WoW_PB_Mo'ruk

Team:

  1. Darkmoon Zeppelin (1,2,2)
  2. Chrominius (1,1,2)
  3. Carry pet

Battle:

vs Woodcarver - Missile > Decoy > Missile until Woodcarver dies.

vs Lightstalker - Switch to Chrominius > pass if it gets stunned > Howl > Surge of Power.

vs Needleback - Chrominius dies usually during the recovery phase, but if not, Bite. - Switch to Zeppelin > Decoy > Missile until Needleback has less than 613 health > Explode.

Farmer Nishi

WoW_PB_Nishi

Team:

  1. Carry pet
  2. Eternal Strider (1,2,2)
  3. Darkmoon Tonk (1,1,1)

Battle:

vs Siren - Ability #1 > Switch to Eternal Strider. - Cleansing Rain > Water Jet > Pump > Pump (if this does not kill Siren, forfeit, heal and begin again).

vs Toothbreaker - Water Jet > Pump > Cleansing Rain > Pump (if this does not kill Toothbreaker, finish it off with Water Jet).

vs Brood of Mothallus - Switch to Darkmoon Tonk > Lock-On > Shock and Awe > Lock-On > Missile.

Travel Route

WoW_PB_FlightPaths

Route

This route has the least amount of riding on the ground and leaves some trainers that do damage to back-line pets for later. It does double back on itself, but once you drop down from the wall to go to Aki, you can't get back up there if you can't fly.

It's set up for characters below level 90, so all flight points, except the last, must be easily accessible from ground. Characters that can fly could stop by Aki after Shu and save some taxi ride time.

Start 1 Fly to Dawn’s Blossom, Jade Forest if starting from the Shrine Hyuna of the Shrines 2 Fly to Thunder Cleft, Krasarang Wilds Mo'ruk 3 Fly to Halfhill, Valley of Four Winds Farmer Nishi 4 Fly to Klaxxi’vess, Dread Wastes Wastewalker Shu 5 Fly to Shado-Pan Garrison, Townlong Steppes Seeker Zusshi 6 Fly to Serpent’s Spine, Vale of Eternal Blossoms Aki the Chosen Hearthstone Finish

Master Pet List

WoW_pets

These are the pets that I have and that I like to use. I will try to give alternatives for the more hard to get pets, but sometimes the strategy I use means that there are no alternatives. That does not mean that this trainer cannot be defeated without them, it means that then you need to find alternative pets and tacts that work with your collection.

All these pets should be level 25 and Rare quality, they should be upgraded with Battle-stones if necessary. Uncommon quality pets are not strong enough for duoing these fights. Most of these pets (except the Red Cricket and the wild pets) are usually available on the Auction House if you have the gold, and don't want to spend the time farming them.

Most of the pets on this list have only one breed, but when the breed matters, I've given it in square brackets. What the letters mean, Warcraftpets explains better than I could.

Bought

Darkmoon Zeppelin. Mechanical, bought with Darkmoon Prize Tickets during Darkmoon Faire. Darkmoon Tonk. Mechanical, bought with Darkmoon Prize Tickets during Darkmoon Faire. Yellow Moth [P/P]. Flying, can be bought from the pet vendor in Exodar by a draenei. Alternatives are any of the moths from Timeless Isle, preferably [P/S] breed, or Pterrodax Hatchling if you happen to have one. But the [P/P] Yellow Moth is so strong and relatively easy to get, that there is no reason not to use one.

Captured

Eternal Strider [P/S]. Insect, found in Vale of Eternal Blossoms. Flayer Youngling [S/S]. Humanoid, found on Razorthorn Hill on the border of Terokkar Forest and Hellfire Peninsula. Breed really matters here, because the strategy depends on the Youngling to be faster than the opposing pet. I recommend finding any quality [S/S] Youngling and upgrading it instead of spending time trying to find a Rare [S/S] one.

Drop

Emerald Whelpling. Dragonkin, dropped by Noxious Whelps in Feralas. Alternative - Nether Faerie Dragon [P/P] or [H/P], captured around Dire Maul in Feralas. Chrominius. Dragonkin, dropped by Chromaggus in Blackwing Lair. Menagerie Custodian [H/P]. Mechanical, dropped by The Curator in Karazhan. Alternative - Darkmoon Tonk. Anubisath Idol. Humanoid, dropped by the Twin Emperors in Ahn'Qiraj.

Reputation

Red Cricket. Critter, mailed to you by Sho after becoming best friends with her.

Set Up

WoW_PB_addons

Add-Ons

PetJournalEnhanced
It adds filtering and sorting options that are extremely useful. This is what Blizzard pet UI should do, but doesn't.
BattlePetBreedID
Shows which breed the pet is. Works on collected pets, pets you're battling against, and battle pets on AH. Very useful if you care about pet breeds. Should also be included in the basic pet UI, but isn't.
BattlePetCount
Shows how many of the pet you have in which quality. Should also be included in the basic pet UI, but isn't.
PetBattleTeams
Make preset teams, allows to have empty slots. I use it for teams against tamers for pet leveling where I want to have two filled slots and a pet that moves between teams.
PetBattleTactician
Shows the spells that your and the opposing team have, including cooldowns. Very useful for strategy planning during the fight.
AutoSafariHat
Pure convenience. This addon equips the Safari Hat from your bags and a team for a trainer, if you have one with their name.
TomTom
Coordinates and pointer arrows. I use this addon for general navigation, not for trainer locations, but it's useful if you don't know exactly where all the trainers are by heart.

Your Character

Your character needs to be at least level 85 and have done the quest line to arrive on Pandaria. You can break the quest line as soon as you touch the ground, there is no need to continue with it. You just need access to the continent.

Safari Hat

You need to have the Safari Hat to be able to level a pet from 1 to 25 in six battles, because it increases the pet xp gained by 10%. The hat is awarded from the achievement Taming the World, so if you do not have that yet, I recommend that you do complete it, but if you haven't or are just starting, don't worry it's not mandatory. Without the hat you may have to do more tamer battles instead of six, or battle wild pets to get your carry pet to 25.

Flight Points

Your character should have the following flight points:

  1. Dawn’s Blossom, Jade Forest
  2. Pang’s Stead, Valley of Four Winds
  3. Halfhill, Valley of Four Winds
  4. Stoneplow, Valley of Four Winds
  5. Thunder Cleft, Krasarang Wilds
  6. Klaxxi’vess, Dread Wastes
  7. Sunset Brewgarden, Dread Wastes
  8. Gao-Ran Battlefront, Townlong Steppes
  9. Rensai’s Watchpost, Townlong Steppes
  10. Shado-Pan Garrison, Townlong Steppes
  11. Serpent’s Spine, Vale of Eternal Blossoms
  12. Shrine of (insert your faction here), Vale of Eternal Blossoms

The last two are accessible via the tower in Kun-Lai Summit even when you're level 85, you just need to run along the Serpent Spine and the towers a little bit then avoid the sha in the Vale to get to the Shrine. There are more flight points to pick up along the way, but these are essential for the route. Your Hearthstone should be set to an inn in the Shrine, or to Dawn's Blossom. I prefer the Shrine, for the easy access to stuff.

How to Level a Battle Pet from 1 to 25 in Six Fights, Intro

August 01, 2014 Posted by Vaire ,

lvl25

My guild showed interest in how do I level battle pets using the Pandaria pet tamers, so I made it into a guide on our forums. Then other people wanted to see it too, and I thought that I should publish it here. It is not going to be as comprehensive as the 5.4 guide on Warcraftpets, but I have used its format as inspiration.

Since the tamers give sweet XP to your character as well as your pets, I wanted to have the most efficient way to level both, hence no spirit tamers, or legendary beasts in this guide. These are the XP gains for your character per tamer (battle + quest):

167 640 XP at lvl 85 228 800 XP at lvl 86 276 100 XP at lvl 87 339 900 XP at lvl 88 410 300 XP at lvl 89
