Vacation -- Edinburgh, part 2

July 30, 2008 Posted by Vaire

Sunday morning was a bit drizzly and when I was heading out I realised that I'd left my jacket at the event site. After briefly contemplating bothering the event stewards about it, I decided not to. The jacket was in good condition, but it had become too big, so I let them know that they could do whatever they wished with it.

I went shopping instead. I'd put off shopping for light duster type coat/jacket because it's the wrong season here in Sweden. No-one needs or wears a jacket in the summer, it is too warm, it doesn't rain very often and when it rains, it pours. The fall garments haven't appeared in the stores yet, we are still in the middle of the summer. So I figured I'd go shop for a jacket in September or so, in the end of August earliest.

The weather in Edinburgh, on the other hand, encourages jackets all year round. It had been generally drizzly, windy and overcast the whole week, with a few moments of sunshine. I reasoned that even if it was summer, people were wearing jackets and coats, so there must be some in the stores.

Well, it was not that simple. You'd think it never rained a drop in Edinburgh based on the selection in some clothing shops. I finally located a rack of jackets and coats in TK Maxx. Most of the styles were complete ugh (that's why I'd left this store to the last), but there was one coat that was perfection itself. Black, light, soft, rain resistant, and most importantly, with a pleated skirt part that comes down to knees. The exact style I've wanted for years and never seen in a store.

The best part? It fits! I was so happy to find it that I decided not to care about the buttons and bought it. (I hate buttons, always have and always will. Yuck!) I also bought a carry-on bag because my suitcase weighed over 20 kilos when I'd arrived and I didn't want to pay overweight on the way back.

It was a good thing I did because my hostess had learned that there was a yarn sale going on at Jenners and John Lewis. We visited both stores on Monday and with the amount of yarn I bought, I really needed the carry-on bag.

I came home with: 12 balls of of Noro Cash Iroha (black), two balls of Rowan Bamboo Tape (black), two hanks of Sulka Merino (black), 8 balls of Rowan Kidsilk Night (plum) and a kit for Shaun. I love the character and I'm going to knit him for myself.

After the shopping, where my hostess showed much more restraint than I did, we had dinner in a pub before we went home. I had bangers and mash, one of my favourite Brit-foods. We'd had haggis for dinner one night and I loved it. It is similar to verivorst (Estonian sausage with blood), but it had liver in it. I think. Which in my book makes it even better. I'm not very keen on actually finding out exactly what do they put in haggis, but I'm definitely going to have some more the next time I'm in Scotland.

My flight was around noon on Tuesday, but I didn't want to take any chances so I left early. Took a bus to down town, then an airport coach from Waverly Station. Stood in line to check in for ever because they only had one desk for all SAS flights. After half an hour, someone had some lights coming on upstairs and opened a second desk. Had a brunch of Cornish pasty (yum!) and browsed the stores a little. Bought some gifts and The Last Hero by Terry Pratchett.

My flight was uneventful (although there was lots going on in Discworld), so was the train / subway ride home.

The End.

Intermission

July 28, 2008 Posted by Vaire

The fan of my laptop has blown once before and it's been overheating for two weeks. I've grown tired of being afraid that the fan blows at any minute now and I was planning to buy another computer soon.

I've been eyeing the iMacs at a store and on-line for a year or so. Today I went to the store to buy small speakers with an iPod dock and I sort of lost it. I walked out of the store not only with the speakers, but with the biggest, meanest, sexiest iMac money can buy.

Yep. The largest screen, the fastest processor, the biggest graphics card and the most memory. I took the standard 500GB hard drive option because I have a 400GB external hard drive and 900GB storage space should be enough for a while.

Please excuse me while I go play with my new toy.

P.S. I've updated the Vacation posts with some pictures.

Vacation -- Battle of the Heart

July 25, 2008 Posted by Vaire

I'm sorry, I've been absent this week. Life took a very interesting turn for me and I was sort of distracted. On with the tale...

On Thursday morning I took the bus to Waverley station and a train to Dunfermline. I was picked up by a lovely C and we stopped by a Tesco on our way to the event. Sigh. I miss Tesco...

The event itself was very laid back, no schedules, no classes, nothing to be afraid of missing. I met some wonderful people and it reinforced my resolution to try to go to more small local events. There are so many people who do not or can not travel, it would be a shame to miss them by only going to the "big 5" events.

I continued to knit on a Tudor flat cap I'd begun at the Coronation. It differs a bit from the first ones I made. I used smaller needles and more stitches to get a tighter fabric, it may come out a bit bigger too. It was meant to be just my event "something to keep my hands occupied" project, but I promised to give it to M. She likes the first one so much that she wears it outside the SCA too and forgets to pack it with event clothes. She's going to get this one so she can have two: one for the SCA kit and one on the hat rack.

At first I'd planned to stay from Thursday to Sunday, but the weather got worse so I left with S on Saturday. The weather had been really sunny on Thursday, but got cloudier, colder and more rainy as the days passed.

I enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and the site was beautiful. (Yes, the pix are on their way. I'll update the posts over the weekend and post a new gallery on the sidebar.)

Vacation -- Edinburgh, part 1

July 18, 2008 Posted by Vaire

One thing I had definitely wanted to do in UK was to take a train somewhere. Reading too much Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers did me in, especially 'Five Red Herrings'. As it worked out, we took a train from London to Edinburgh on Sunday so I didn't visit Glasgow for the train ride. The ride was peaceful and I tried to imagine how the train would have looked in the 1930's.

On Monday I went down town to look around little and shop. I'd promised to give my big (30GB) iPod away to a friend and wanted a new one. I bought an 8GB Nano in silver because it was cheaper than what I'd been able to find here in Stockholm. It worked fine for a week and yesterday evening it froze, broke my iTunes and froze again this morning. Blech! Fortunately I'd registered it, so I'll see if I can get someone to fix it here. It's exactly what I'd wanted — small, compact and has a screen. Too bad it's not cooperating.

A view from The Mound towards the hill where Edinburgh castle is. I fell in love with the architecture.

I also found a very nice black top for myself. Now that I'm shopping for clothes again, I've noticed that black tops are much easier to find than skirts/trousers/jeans. Could be that I'm very picky about the length, material and cut of the clothes, but it's much easier to find a black natural fibre top that fits me than a black natural fibre ankle length skirt. Any skirt of that description, really. Add to that the requirement to fit and well... Anyway. Enough complaining about clothes, I do that too often.

My lovely hostess had recommended a one day bus tour in Highlands and I thought that it was a brilliant idea. I went on Tuesday and I fell in love. Scottish Highlands are breathtaking! We visited the Doune Castle where Monty Python filmed some bits of Holy Grail, saw 'airy coo (I love, love, love Scots accent!) and bought a cone of Scottish wool from Killin. I wanted only 150g for hat and mittens, but was informed that she sold only by cone, so cone it was. Now I've got enough to make a blanket (1.2 kilos).

Doune Castle. Some day I want to have enough time to go inside and have a look around.

A loch. I'm sorry, but I can't remember the name.

On Wednesday I took it easy and visited a small shopping centre with Sainsbury's, Clarks, TK Maxx, etc. I just generally browsed in the clothing stores (didn't find any skirts) and bought food for the event that began on Thurdsay.

Vacation -- London

July 14, 2008 Posted by Vaire

I'm back home and have lots to tell. I was fun and exhausting at the same time, but oh so worth all the aching feet!

The flight was uneventful and the journey in London Underground was as well. The Tube was an experience, though — tight, dirty and incredibly noisy. I was also appalled by the lack of escalators or lifts because hoisting the 22 kilo suitcase up and down the stairs was not what I'd expected to do on my first day (or on any subsequent day) of vacation. Later I learned that Picadilly line is one of the old ones, the new lines have wider cars and lifts are more frequent, but still... that sucker was heavy!

Before taking a train to the event site with my gracious hosts on Friday I took a walk in London and visited the Museum of London. I bought a new book about textiles in archaeology and took pictures of (mostly) textiles in the museum. Spindle shafts, whorls, a knit cap and a foot of a stocking among others. (I haven't had time to upload pics from my camera so this post will remain picture less for now.)

Updated to add some photos I took in the Museum of London.

Thimbles and sewing needles in Museum of London.

Thimbles and sewing needles. I want a thimble like that, I wonder if some of my metalworking friends could help me make one.

German scissors from 1500's in Museum of London.

German scissors from 1500's. Love, pure love. These took my breath away, they are that beautiful. Seriously! Look at that detail:

I really, really hope that the photos of the foot of the stocking came out well! Even if they did I am tempted to contact the textile curator and ask permission to examine the piece to write a pattern from it.

There was a knit cap beside it, but there are better quality photos online so I didn't devote many pixels to it. I've heard they have a whole drawer of flat caps. I could spend days there counting stitches and documenting the techniques used! Will someone please give me a grant to go study 16th century knit headgear in UK? Pretty please? All joking aside, I am seriously considering asking permission to study those caps and spend some weeks of my vacation in the museum.

The event itself was not as big as I'd thought it would be, but my disappointment stemmed mainly from the fact that some of my friends from Ireland were not able to come. I'd very much hoped to see them again. The coronation itself was beautiful and the rest of the activities were interesting.

I got to hang out with friends from Finland I hadn't seen for a very long time and that was good. I've missed events in Aarnimetsä and now that I'm back in Scandinavia I'll make sure to go to at least one local (not Kingdom level) event at least once a year in Aarnimetsä.

On Sunday I took a train up to Edinburgh with my hostess and thus ends the first part of my vacation.
