Of Health and Games

September 29, 2008 Posted by Vaire

Usually I keep really quiet about health matters because no-one wants to read the gory details, nor is it interesting to hear me bitch about being in pain or having a cold. I'm going to make an exception now because I had a new experience today — I had an ultrasound screening done.

Backstory: I've had pains and discomfort in my stomach for years now, at least since 2002. I went to a doctor here in Stockholm right before moving to Dublin and he wasn't very helpful. I went to a GP in Dublin who sent me to a gastroenterologist who tentatively diagnosed IBS and wanted to do some tests to rule out other problems. Then I got a job in Stockholm and moved right before the tests could be carried out.

I read about IBS, it sounded right, and the symptoms are spot-on. The specialist had recommended increasing fibre in my diet, which I did and things stabilised. Fast forward to August this year. I was on my way to work when I suddenly felt nauseous and almost threw up at T-Centralen. Finally I made it to the commuter train, but decided that perhaps it wasn't such a good idea to go to work after all. So I went home and stayed home for the rest of the week because the pains had returned with a vengeance.

It may be that I simply ate something bad and my innards being fussy threw a proper fit. It could have been something else entirely. I didn't want to take that risk so I booked a time with another GP and showed him the letter I'd gotten from the gastroenterologist in Dublin. He wanted to do the same tests as the specialist and also a blood test. (Shudder. I have a problem with poking, but I'm not going to tell that story now.) I'd meant to visit a GP here in Stockholm anyway to ask him to authorise the ultrasound and colonoscopy the specialist had wanted to have done, but things had happened, switching to Swedish food had helped enormously, there had been no urgency before.

The GP agreed that we should start with the tests to rule out other possible causes. The blood lab was in the same house so I got it done first. The results came back normal, which is a good thing. The ultrasound was scheduled for today. I'd never been to ultrasound before so it was really unexpected that she pressed so hard on the ribs. I haven't checked for bruises yet, but I wouldn't be surprised to find some.

I asked to see the pictures, but she hadn't saved any. Meh. I was curious to see how it looked inside. The doctor said that she didn't see anything out of the ordinary. So far so good. Colonoscopy is scheduled for 4th of November and I'm not at all looking forward to it. It most likely will confirm IBS and then we'll go on from there.

One thing I am looking forward to is the release of The Wrath of the Lich King, the second expansion pack for World of Warcraft, on 13th of November. Many hours of fun await.

Nothing Much

September 22, 2008 Posted by Vaire

I haven't been doing much, hence no posts. I've knit a bit, sewed a bit, worked, skritched the cats and have been trying to fight off a cold. The camera is dead for good so I can't even show you any pretty pictures. I haven't dropped dead or fallen off the face of the Earth, it's just really quiet here.

I have set my computers free

September 12, 2008 Posted by Vaire

I have set my computers free. It was my intention from the beginning to have a wireless network in the flat, but the Belkin router I'd bought in Ireland didn't want to cooperate. Since I could connect to the 'net via cable, it wasn't urgent to fix it or get another router.

Until now. I've been eyeing Apple's AirPort Extreme for a while and decided today that I didn't want to wait any longer. The main reason I liked the AirPort was that I could plug in my external hard drive disk to it and reduce the tangle of cables under my table.

The cables were reduced beautifully, but AirPort Utility whines that I need to "fix" my disk. I suspect that what they really mean is that I need to format it to Mac. That's not going to happen before I get all the files transferred. Which means that I need to re-create the tangle until I get everything organised. Bummer.

Another bummer — my camera died. For real. It is almost five years old and has been shaky for the past year. Now it only flashes black and the photos come out black too.

I discovered that when I tried to take pictures of my new hair cut. Since I used my savings for the AirPort I may have to resort to my camera phone. That depends how fast I can save up for a new camera and/or how desperately I want to upload pix to the blog. For the time being, this blog will remain sadly pictureless.

More New Yarn

September 05, 2008 Posted by Vaire

A while back I sent a sock yarn package to vampy (Ravelry) in exchange of some of her handspun. Her package came yesterday and the yarn is absolutely gorgeous!

Vampy's handspun

It's very soft black with red highlights and glints. The photo doesn't do any justice to the yarn. Now I need to find the perfect scarf pattern, the autumn is here.

New Yarn

September 03, 2008 Posted by Vaire

On Monday I showed a couple of guests from Italy around Stockholm's yarn stores. We went to Marias Garn, Nysta, Lindqvist Garn, Garnverket and Anntorps Väv.

I bought some yarn too, although I tried to restrict myself some. I am afraid that you have to imagine the yarns right now, the camera died as I was taking the photos. I hope he problem was just batteries and I can update the post tomorrow.

Black Malabrigo lace

Two skeins of black Malabrigo lace from Maria's Garn, that are meant to replace the two I traded away.

Colinette Jitterbug

Colinette Jitterbug from Nysta. It's going to make a fantastic pair of socks!

Visjö

Visjö from Anntorps Väv. This yarn is truly unique, each skein was different and I spent some time choosing to make sure I got the darkest one.

Aade lõng

These two I bought in Tallinn on Saturday to make Revontuli Shawl.
